Today I’m speaking with Lisa Pridemore (@downtownyogagreenville on Facebook & Instagram). Lisa is the owner of Downtown Yoga Greenville – aptly named as it is located in the heart of downtown Greenville, SC at Studio 17. It’s a beautiful light filled space complete with exposed brick and wood floors. It’s the studio I had been longing to find, but did not discover until January of this year. As a personal trainer I recognized the ideological benefits of yoga…I would take a hot yoga class every now and then. Or jump on the bandwagon when a local studio was offering some kind of discount. But none of the places I tried had any real staying power (not for me at least). I was not pulled to continue going back. They did not have what I was ultimately looking for. I wanted traditional yoga. I wanted to find a place where I could find some inner stillness. I wanted to leave feeling rejuvenated and more centered. A place where I could really let go, walk in with no makeup on and just be there. After taking just one class with Lisa – I knew that I had finally found what I was looking for!????????
If you are listening and you aren’t local to the Greenville, SC area I still encourage you to invest some time in finding a yoga practice that speaks to you. I used to think yoga was too wu-wu for me…I just didn’t get what it had that my dynamic stretching did not. It’s true that yoga is not a one size fits all. I personally am not a fan of larger classes, hot yoga, or power yoga…but that’s just me.
Aside from teaching the yoga class of my dreams. Lisa is also the fitness director at Green Valley Country Club where she teaches classes throughout the week. She splits her time between the Green Valley Country Club and the downtown Studio 17 location. And this lady really knows her stuff. It’s no surprise to me that Lisa has over 18 years experience as a certified personal trainer (through ACE and NETA). And 15 years experience teaching yoga. She received her certifications through the Yoga Alliance and Asheville Yoga Center located in Asheville, NC. When she’s not training or on a mat herself you can find Lisa tending to her garden! She also meets regularly with the Legacy Charter Basketball team to assist in their practice of yoga!
IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS:
✔️ How she started on this path.
✔️ She explains her journey with yoga and her devotion to attain an experience beyond just the poses.
✔️ Lisa shares openly about the obstacles of running her own business.
✔️ She says that beyond the physical work of the body, yoga is meant to be a cleansing of the body and the mind, and the thoughts…so that we may open up & be made to receive or give more freely.
✔️ We discuss Group vs solitary practice of yoga/meditation
✔️ The effect of comparison & the competitive nature we can have in a group setting
✔️ Coming to terms with the fact that she won’t be the “right” yoga teacher for everyone
✔️ We talk about the things that hold people back from trying yoga
Her voice alone is SO soothing – I have a feeling you will walk away from this episode feeling refreshed and more aware…I think Henry Miller said it best ‘The aim of life is to live, and to live means to be aware, joyously, drunkenly, serenely, divinely aware.
