Today I’m chatting with fellow fitness trainer Jasmine Cruz. I first met her in Nantucket, while visiting my gal pal Georgie Morley (who y’all may remember from episode #73 and #53 here on the pod). I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Jasmine and I hold very similar values when it comes to our approach to training (which is RARE!). Looking back, I was so caught up in my ego when I first began training. I was desperate to prove my worth to clients. Frantic to justify, with measurable data, that I could help people lose the inches and pounds. Fitness was a way to help someone achieve satisfaction with their appearance (a fleeting and never-ending goal). And while the road was paved with good intentions, I didn’t have the capacity to train outside of this mindset. Fortunately, I’ve grown so much since that time, and my approach to training has shifted drastically. So you can imagine my delight when I met Jasmine who shares a similar story.
IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS:
- Her journey to becoming woke as a personal trainer
- Her approach to training now vs. in the past
- The turning point that caused her to shift the way she trained her clients
- Imposter Syndrome and the pressure to “look the part” as a personal trainer
- Feeling pressure to “set the example” in your industry
- Clients who get caught up in attaching their identity and worth to their appearance, and how as a personal trainer, you can approach this
- Training with the intention of instilling a relationship with fitness that is NOT based on appearance
- How appearance is fleeting – and ultimately will never be enough
- Even if you do get to a place of “I’ve made it” now you’re bombarded with the pressure to MAINTAIN it
- How images we see in media manipulates our perception of reality
- Choosing to stay true to your values instead of following the industry norm
- How challenging it can be to tell people something they don’t want to hear (fear of disappointing someone)
- Having grace with yourself for mistakes you’ve made in the past (when you know better you can do better)
- The growth stages we went through as trainers, unconscious of the pressure we put on ourselves (fighting the internal battle)
- How I (unconsciously) had a sense of inner superiority in identifying with my knowledge and expertise as a trainer
- Differentiating what once fueled our ego, is not YOU
- Using fitness as a way to show your body respect
- The objectification of women and their bodies
- The pressures and insecurities we faced as trainers
