LPP #78 Self-Advocacy, Sitting With Our Feelings, Medication & Mental Health With Davida Lederle From The Healthy Maven

Today I’m chatting with Davida Lederle, who is the blogger/podcaster/youtuber behind The Healthy Maven.  She uses her many platforms to help encourage women to live healthFULLY rather than living for their health.

Given how similar our take is on health and wellness, it’s no surprise to me that I instantly clicked with Davida. Her goal in sharing her own experiences,  is to inspire you to be your own health advocate. And I could NOT agree with her more when she says “There are enough voices out there trying to tell you how to live your life, I’d rather be the person who reminds you that ultimately there is no better expert on you, than you.”

IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS:

  • Her experience with being so transparent out on the interwebs
  • “vulnerability hangovers”
  • Processing things first before sharing with her online community
  • Sharing our stories as a way of letting them go for ourselves
  • Carrying shame and guilt for being in the wellness space while taking medication for her depression and anxiety
  • If it feels like a full time job to holistically micro-manage your mental health symptoms – is this really living?
  • Davida’s mental health journey & why she began taking medication
  • High Functioning Depressive: very regimented & follows strict  routines in order to cope with the world around them. May lead to social isolation/ limited interaction/ lack of community
  • Depression is often an underlying cause that may lead to generalized feelings of anxiety
  • Learning to identify triggers
  • Historically subscribing to the “more is better” philosophy
  • Her experience with coexisting depression and anxiety
  • When you feel triggered, the clarity that can be gained by talking with someone who is not triggered is helpful
  • The physiological sensations we may experience with an emotion (stomach clench, tenseness, heart race, short of breath, jaw clenching, shoulders hike up)
  • Navigating feelings of comparison
  • Committing ourselves to things we don’t really want to do
  • Dealing with feelings of “SHOULD”
  • “No is a practice”
  • Not self advocating out of fear of upsetting someone VS. speaking up immediately without processing how we feel first
  • “Usually feelings subside, the more time we sit with them” – Davida Lederle
  • The misconception that when someone works out a lot, they must just be “really healthy”
  • The difference between recovering from an exercise addition vs. an eating disorder
  • Feeling like you’re not living the life you “should” be
