This conversation was such a joy! And I could not WAIT to share this episode the second we finished recording it. Aside from a few email exchanges, I’d never spoken to Jessi prior to this chat…but you know you’ve really hit it off with someone when you toss your head back in full on belly laughter during the interview!
Jessi Haggerty is a non-diet Registered Dietitian, Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, and Certified Personal Trainer with a private practice in Somerville, MA. She received her Bachelors of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics from Boston University and completed her Dietetic Internship at Oregon Health and Science University.
Jessi has been featured on Career Contessa, vv attire, Refinery29, Men’s Fitness, Self Magazine, Women’s Health, and Fitness Magazine, and has been named an “RD to Watch in 2017” by Today’s Dietitian Magazine.
IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS:
x The pressure to live up to the ideal of being a “perfect” trainer & dietitian, playing the role of what she felt like she should be to live up to expectations and set the example
x Her opinion on the diet industry selling weight loss as self-care
x Being able to accept the things that are uncomfortable which is why we spend so much time dieting
x We talk about how our perception influences our actions & emotions
x Her thoughts on the recent weight watchers promotion offering their services free to teenagers
x Her own personal background doing weight watchers while in high school
x The weight cycling conundrum and why people often go back to their FIRST diet
x You are NOT the problem, the circumstances you are in are the problem
x Why you gain weight (often more than when you started the diet) after doing a diet
x We never think that the diet is the problem, we think WE are the problem.
x Diet-centric thinking: putting the ownership of non-success [with a diet] on the person, and not recognizing the dieting itself is the problem
x The internal struggle she faced as a registered dietitian before she became a non-diet RD. Why she wasn’t buying what she was selling.
x Many of her clients have food rules, that they’ve been living by, but are unaware of
x Her take on elimination diets (i.e. the whole 30)
x Her advice on starting an intuitive eating journey when you have young children, especially when you want to model having a healthy relationship with food and your body
x We are not our body parts, but rather a whole being.
x The thing she learned to do in dance class, as a little kid, that had me in STITCHES
x Why we both have an issue with the saying “the only workout you’ll regret is the one you didn’t do”
x Why she loves crying
